Digital Camera for High School Newspaper

Recently, the Journalism Department of my school recieved a US$900.00 grant from a private foundation to buy a digital camera. As PhotoEditor of the paper, I was charged with researching and purchasing the camera. I was leaning very strongly towards the Mavica FD-91, but after reading about it's resolution, I decided against it. The CoolPix 990 would be nice, but I'm not sure if that is in our price range. Please recommend a camera for me to purchase. A few things you might keep in mind:

We are running an ALL-MACINTOSH publication The camera will be in use for AT LEAST 5 years A zoom lens is a *MUST* for the camera

Though we are currently using very, very old Macs to publish the paper, we
*might* get a G4 next year. USB is not really too big an option right now. User-friendliness is not a big issue, as I will be around for two more years to teach the new photographer(s) how to use it. We only have two photographers on staff at any given time, so it won't be out of our sight/care very often. One of the main reasons I was considering the FD-91 was because of it's zoom lens (in addition to the floppy disks). The ideal camera for us would have a somewhat-long zoom, but quality is very important.

P.S: The digital camera will be used as a supplement to my Canon EOS 630, for which I have a host of lenses and other accessories. If we get a good digital, however, the Canon will become supplementary.

---------------------

get a camera from mobshop.com you can get some good deals, use the 20% off coupons (see past posts). I would get either a olympus c-2020 or nikon 950 which is about $450-$500 (nikon 950 can be bought from another dealer) and save the rest in a fund for a new $450-$500 camera in a few years or in case something happens to the first one. For $900 you can't really get something 2x as good in my opinion and for newspapers 2 megapixels is more than enough resolution. In a few years you can upgrade to the latest and greatest with the extra dough. Its going to be a pain in the @$$ to download on a mac without USB since it is sooo slow but you don't have too many other options, maybe a flashpath adapter?
