I recently received an email from a man in Houston whos' son has graduated
from high school this year. The son has a talent in photography (he has won
several awards) and wants to go to school to pursue a career involving
photography. The father is very supportive of this idea and needs help. They
need the names of some schools, ideas regarding grants.......anything. The
letter was quite moving to me as this man explained his love and support for
his son....so any suggestions or ideas at all, please let me know

-The best education that this young man will get is to move to NY and
spend a few years assisting photographers who's work he admires. Schools
have that advantage of having equipment available to learn the basics,
however they fall down when it comes to the business end.... As an
assistant, he will learn more of the creative process, the marketing of
himself, any not be saddled with student loans. After a few years, he
will have money in the bank to start his carrier and the knowledge to
make the easy transition to photographer. -I have to say that a good education in this very fast changing business is a must.
The young man should move to New York, not the NYC, but to Rochester. RIT has one
of the best photography degrees available and they don't short the students on the
business end either. Write to RIT, get a catalog. look it over carefully. There
are other schools - Brooks in California also has an excellent reputation. Chect
that one out too. I am sure others will post some more, but I think RIT should get
your immediate attention.
