IMHO, those week long workshops will teach you far more than any year's worth of college type classes. The instructors are usually the top of the field of the subject, the students are other photographers, many are top level on their own, and even the other beginners are highly motivated. High energy level to say the least. There are many such schools using the workshop method, some that target the portrait and wedding market, PPA does that around the country, to places like the Rocky Mountain school, Maine Workshops, and many others.
Prices range for 4-500 to 1,200 or so, plus a weeks stay someplace, then you have photo safaris, some are actually instructive and not just guided tours for people with expensive cameras.
