Has anyone been through this program or know anything about it? How
selective are they? What other options in NYC do you recommend for
someone looking for practical knowledge without too much theoretical
bull?
I earned my BFA at SVA. That was about a million years ago (actually
early '80s). The MFA program was just beginning then. Based on the
undergraduate program I experienced (and the stories the assistants I
have hired since who have attented SVA have shared) it is still a
superb art college.
Despite my interest in commercial work, SVA is very helpful to people
who want to pursue that direction because of it's heavy **art**
emphasis. In other words, they are more concerned about you being an
artist first. If the graduate program is structured the same way, and
I believe it is, you will get a strong foundation. All the
instructors are working professionals. They will not hire anyone who
simply teaches; you must be active in whatever field you teach.
IMO, the School of Visual Arts has the best photography program in the
New York City area, and probably the best deal for your $$.
